1. What got you into teaching? I decided to start teaching after I spend eight years as a police officer. I realized I wasn't able to reach the youth with thought-provoking conversations in the short amount of time I was in their presence on a call for service. I felt the need to ensure each child I encountered knew they mattered to someone.
2. How long have you been teaching at Riverside Prep? What brought you here? This is my first year at Riverside Prep. The district gave me the opportunity to focus on building self-esteem and helping students find their voice while teaching the curriculum.
3. What do you like about teaching at Riverside Prep? There are many opportunities for teachers to be able to build on teacher-student relationships with involvement in after-school activities.
4. What's the best part about teaching high school students? What's the biggest challenge? I enjoy having intelligent conversations about current events that are particular to them. Sometimes it is difficult convincing them to embrace the differences that make them unique, while ignoring the negative opinions of others.

5. What's your favorite moment in teaching? My favorite moment in teaching is when I am able to create a bond with a student that revolves around their feeling of safety and mutual effect.

6. What does it mean to be the High School Teacher of the Month? Being Teacher of the Month is an honor and a reassurance that my efforts are on the right path with the assistance of many wonderful colleagues.
